MOTHER TONGUE

She's the child of a deaf mother, he's mixed race. Together they are HALF/ASIAN, a band creating music addressing ableism and racism.

HALF/ASIAN is a mixed race synth pop duo featuring Ian Griffiths (Cantonese/British) musician and Amy Braun a CODA (a child of deaf adult). The band is going on tour this summer, and for the first time ever, Amy will perform using her voice, in addition to performing in sign language.

Amy’s story starts with her mother Audrey. Being born into a bilingual and bicultural home, with hearing privileges and sign language skills, put Amy in a unique position to fill in the gaps for accessibility everywhere that access was not provided. She fell naturally into the role of being a child interpreter in both casual and professional settings at a very young age. Once she realized she wasn’t interested in her pre-assumed career as an interpreter, she began working in the music industry.

Now in her thirties, Amy is trying to figure out her place in the communities she belongs to. This is a coming of age story, a story of healing and transformation as Amy is searching to find her place and sense of belonging. "It's really a reclamation of language, and me reconnecting to the language that formed my life and made me who I am," Braun said. This deeply personal film will chronicle the Vancouver Island leg of the tour with the aim of uncovering conversations about inclusion and diversity.
